A Surprise Twist to My First Solo Trip

ree

I decided to book my first solo trip after my son invited me to hang out with his family in Orlando. Since I was already going to be in the area, I thought, why not book my first solo cruise? But just days before I was supposed to jet off to Orlando, my son dropped the news that he and his wife were splitting up and he wouldn’t be going to Orlando.

With theme park tickets and airfare already in hand, I decided to book my own hotel room and turn my solo trip into an even more exciting adventure!  I was a bit nervous about visiting the theme parks alone, but that didn’t stop me from being as excited as a kid in a candy store!

Finding Freedom at Disney Springs

I chose a hotel within walking distance of Disney Springs, making it super convenient for food and transportation.  After checking in, I strolled over to Disney Springs. Let me tell you, at 54, I felt like a teenager experiencing newfound freedom! I could do whatever I pleased, whenever I pleased, without considering anyone else.

It was a surreal mix of "woohoo!" and a sprinkle of "aww." Sad? Maybe a smidge. Invigorating? Absolutely.

Conquering the Parks Solo

During my few days in Orlando, I hit up Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure and Epcot. Having been to all the theme parks with my family, I had the lay of the land, which made solo navigating a breeze. Each park offered a unique experience, and I savored my solo adventures.

Generally, Disney has a more family-centric vibe while Universal Studios appeals more to teens and adults. Universal Studios, with its single rider lines, made me feel more blended in. The rides are primarily designed for pairs, so I was either teamed up with another lone ranger or the odd man out in a trio.

Epcot, the most adult-friendly Disney park, still caters its rides to families, and I occasionally felt out of place on the rides as I was often squeezed in with family groups who seemed to think I was the odd sock in their laundry basket.

That One Awkward Moment

Now, having said that, the most awkward moment happened at the Leaky Cauldron at Universal Studios. When asked how many were in my party, I confidently replied, "Just one." The woman in front of me turned around with a look that said, "Really?" with a very negative undertone.

I shrugged it off, but then I was seated right next to them! The woman kept staring at me, not a side-eyed stare either, which was about as appetizing as a soggy sandwich. I’m not sure what her issue was, but it was just that, her issue. I just ignored her and enjoyed my meal (but I was glad when they finally left!)

Final Thoughts: Why I’d Do It Again

Otherwise, I absolutely loved my solo time in Orlando! There's an endless array of things to do, and getting around was a breeze. Staying at a property within walking distance to Disney Springs made me feel so safe and secure as a solo traveler. Plus, having the freedom to explore the parks at my own pace was truly transformative. I had an amazing time and would wholeheartedly recommend that anyone who loves these parks should definitely experience Orlando on a solo adventure!
